Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan

Along with the ongoing struggle for the rights of the locals in the Narmada valley, many constructive works have also been laid by the Trust. A brief introduction to the works of the Trust till date:

Health: Monitoring Primary Health Centres under National Rural Health Mission, with community participation.

Education: Running 9 Jeevanshalas providing primary school education and other non-formal education including training the youth and Adivasis in their legal rights. At present, 7 of the Narmada Jeevanshalas are in Maharashtra and 2 are in Madhya Pradesh. All the 9 Jeevanshalas need to be residential schools because of the very difficult terrain they are situated in. Running a hostel (of about 40 students) to provide safe shelter and facilitate education beyond primary school.

Forest Rights: Mobilization and training of Adivasi communities in Forest Rights and following up with government authorities.

Fishing Rights: Organizing Fishing Co-operatives and training farmers to become fishers as their lands are under water. Recently rights to 3 Fishing Cooperatives in the Maharashtra submergence zone have been granted. We are planning to take up fisheries on a large scale as a basic right of the project affected fisher-folk to benefit from development in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh

Right to food: Ensuring rations (PDS) for all Adivasis – especially those in the most backward, hilly interior areas.

Land Rights: Controlling corruption even through legal battles, if required.

Right to Rehabilitation: Thousands of project affected Adivasis, farmers and labourers in Gujarat and Maharashtra have been rehabilitated with land being received for land submerged with house plots and other amenities being provided because of the consistent efforts of NNNA workers over the years. Thousands of families in M.P. remain to be rehabilitated even today though submergence started in 1995, NNNA continues to work for these families by exposing corruption and providing legal as well as other aid.

MNREGA: Awareness building, organizing Adivasis, conducting social audits, and challenging corruption are some major activities.

Relief work during emergencies: Abhiyaan has always lent its helping hand in various crises like floods, fires, earthquakes, tsunamis and lockdown occurring across the country.

Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan’s future direction:

The 34-year-old conflict in the Narmada basin has been shaped by the basic principle of ‘democracy through people’s participation’. Much has been achieved and much remains to be achieved. Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan continue to work on the following issues in future:

  • To provide basic amenities and forest rights to people living in resettlement settlements and hilly areas on the banks of Narmada.
  • To rehabilitate the remaining tribal families justly by helping them to get recognized agricultural land or plots.
  • Training tribals in organic farming, group farming, farming and forestry.
  • Promoting adult literacy and small scale enterprise development in collaboration with life schools.
  • To create awareness among the youth and provide them with the necessary training and promote alternative development.
