About Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan
Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan is a Trust registered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The trust is concentrating its activities on providing primary school education to those Adivasi (tribal) children who hail from villages in the Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges, which are severely affected by submergence due to the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). The submergence zone of the SSP includes 19 villages in Gujarat, 33 villages in Maharashtra and 193 villages in Madhya Pradesh, where Adivasi communities such as the Bhils, Bhilalas, Pawaras and Tadvis reside. Access to numerous remote villages even today is extremely difficult, because of the hilly terrain and the need to travel by boat to reach some of the schools. Facilities provided by the government in such areas are minimal and irregular those too attained after much struggle.
The Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan Trust was established in 2004 in the long march of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, which was carried on through a completely non-violent and democratic process. Along with the ongoing struggle for the rights of the locals in the Narmada valley, many constructive works have also been laid by the Trust.
